Different size shocks and shock mounts depending on year?

I've got a 91 and I picked up some used Koni's from a fellow board member here. I tried putting them on, but the nut on the front that holds the shock in place wouldn't go over the shock..

No big deal I thought.. I put it on the lathe and turned it out making it work. Everything cool right?


No.. Now it still fits through the upper strut mount, but the nut was bigger.. I go look through the huge bin of nuts and bolts I have and find exactly what I want.. right on right?...

No, its so much bigger that the 22mm socket needed to tighten that nut up, won't fit through the strut mount... not even close.

I am very well educated on e34's and there are two different sizes depending on years.. Is that the case with the E30's?

Any help is greatly appreciated as my car is sitting there with the rear suspension swapped, but yearning for the front to be finished...

Nevermind.. I turned a socket down on the lathe and got it installed.

never heard of that before. When I put in my Billie sports the shaft was twice the size but it came with a new collor and the threaded part that went into the strut bearing was the same size as my old one. At least you figured something out

i know that 318i/is use 45mm struts and that all other e30 models use 51mm struts I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But the shocks should be universal throughout all models.
