    Help diagnose my problem

    Hey all,

I just picked up a '91 318is a few days ago for an awesome price. However, the only problem it seems to have is that when I make sharp right turns, the passenger side area makes a loud knocking/rubbing noise.

I'm thinking maybe it needs either a new control arm or tie rod? Not quite sure, but I'd rather find out on here versus having a mechanic look at it and charge me $80 for 10 minutes of work.

First of all, welcome to r3v!

As for your problem: with the car on the ground, wiggle the wheel side to side and in and out. Side to side movement is tie rods- in and out is usually wheel bearings.

If you don't feel anything there, put the car on jack stands and crawl underneath to look for anything worn. Check the boots for tears and look at the condition of the CAB's.

Because you mention a rubbing noise in hard turns, I would bet on the CAB's needing replacement. They could be deflecting so much that the tire rubs on the inner fender. As for the clunking, check the upper strut mounts to see if they are blown/ loose.

      Thanks for the reply.

I took it to a mechanic and it turned out that my driveshaft hanger bearing was shot and needs to be replaced.
