    Marred the strut

So, I've got some GC camber plates to install, and I had to get the 19mm nut off the top of the front struts. I read that channel locks with a rag or towel to protect the strut could be used to help hold the strut in place. Unfortunately it wasn't enough protection, and I marred the side of the strut. It looks low enough that it may be a problem too :(

There are two small gouges, they are pretty shallow.

    Should have bought an impact.

How big of a deal is it?

If the dings in the shaft are able to get past the wiper and seal the damper is toast.

The forums are a wealth of information, but I can't understand why people continue to make the same mistakes for YEARS.

I have fixed one strut that had this happen with very careful sanding with up to 800 grit sandpaper and then polishing. The gouges weren't very deep, however.

These aren't. The car has been up on jackstands, so the shock has not moved.

My father mentioned this would happen occasionally to some of the hydraulics he'd deal with at work, and they would sand it down. I'm going to go take care of it now.

I need new front struts soon anyhow.

DRTSRFR, multiple searches suggested grabbing the strut with a wrench with a towel or cloth to protect it if an impact gun wasn't on hand.

...last resort which usually ends up tragically.

            ...as you now know. Sorry.

Dremel + sanding up to 800 grit seemed to work well.

Ahh, I love the camber plates. They made a big improvement on handling.
