    No power steering fluid ?

My e36 steering rack that I installed leaks very badly. The rack is junk as far as I'm concerned, so I decided to just remove the PS belt and let the fluid leak out for a temporary solution. At this point, I don't believe there is any fluid in the rack.

Been running it for a few hundred miles already. How long can you run a power steering rack with no power steering fluid before it stops functioning?

It will go for a while, but the fluid is there to lubricate it. As long as road gunk is not getting in the rack you will be ok. I hit a nasty ice chunk and it put a hole in my pan and made the steering rack leak also. I just took the belt off and have been running for at least 1k miles with no problems. Enjoy the workout parking the car...
