    4x100 to 4x98 safety question

    So I've been looking for a new set of wheels for my e30, but I really can't justify spending the money as I have two other unfinished projects at the moment. However, my tires are shot and my bottlecaps are a little less than true.

    One of my projects is an '87 Maserati Biturbo that I have put a set of TH lines on so I happen to have the original 14x6.5 et0 4x98 wheels with brand new tires sitting around.

    I did a little searching and I've seen it done including some VW guys just bolting them up. The question is rather or not it's safe to bolt them up or should I look into these "wobble bolts" that I read about. Perhaps there is another option. I just want to make sure it's safe. Re-drilling is out of the question.

    I attached a pic of the Biturbo because I'm uber proud of it. It will be lowered after paint. It has a custom set of GC coilovers with Konis.

      i would try to bolt them up, if they wil bolt up leave them. if not, get them re-drilled.

          Wobbles should work. I wouldn't track it or anything, but you could roll on 'em.

            I have another car specifically for track use. The BMW is just a daily/work car. I also noticed the the hub bore on the Maserati wheels is 58.6, so I guess I will need a 57.1 hub ring as well?

              Correct.
              I would, as a few others above advised, try bolting them up w/hub rings (57.1 to 58.6) if you can and just seeing if they ride okay. Otherwise, wobble bolts are probably your best bet. Not sure you can even have those re-drilled without totally boning the finished mounted product. Looking classy though. I wouldn't mind a thread on that Biturbo ;)

                You're right. There is no possible way to re-drill...at least not that I am willing to do. I ordered a set of wobble bolts from serpent motorsports (these guys are great, been helping with the Maserati and I bought a ton from them for my old 308 and Alfa Milano) and they are machining a hubcentric ring from 57.1 to 58.6 for me. I should have them by Thursday so I'll get the wheels mounted up this weekend and shoot some pictures.

                I am going to be painting the Maserati this weekend, so if it's alright I will throw up a build thread on it.

                      Got some good news from the guys at Serpent Motorsports this morning. Luckily, he had a Biturbo wheel laying around. When he measured the amount of threads past the mounting face using the wobble bolts, there was about 11.5mm of clearance which is plenty for a secure mount. I ended up ordering a set of 64-57.1mm hubcentric rings which I will machine down to the required 58.6 for the biturbo wheels. Seems like a lot of work just to throw some wheels on the car, but cost savings in the long run is exponential!

                        Fitted...

                        In case any of you were wondering how this all worked out, well it was quite the adventure. I had researched the wheels and made sure all of my calculations were correct before I made the 6 hour drive up north to switch the wheels. When I got the wheels I was in for quite the surprise.

                        Everything I read about the Biturbo wheels said that they were 14x6, et11 and 6 respectively. I even found a shot of someone who had the wheels mounted on an E30. Problem is that I was researching the wrong wheels. My Biturbo is not your standard early car nightmare. It is actually an Si, meaning that it was built with fuel injection, slightly different interior and guess what? Different wheels. The wheels on my car were actually 4x98, 14x7 et0. In addition, the bolting area was too deep for the wobble bolts to penetrate and get a safe grip. In addition, the hubcentric rings were completely out of the question. What was a guy to do?

                        The answer was to make my own hubcentric rings (58.6-57.1) out of copper to center the wheels. We then used the factory bolts from the Maserati (I had new ones for the Schmdts) and bolted them up. Althought I am not crazy about the poke in the front, it will have to do for now. To make sure all is well down the road I have ordered a lug conversion with wobble nuts. After a 6 hour drive with no vibration and no loss of torque in the lug nuts I am pleased to say that the car is better off now. I will need to invest in some camber plates for the front to fix the poke, but I want a set that lowers the car a little as well so that's my next purchase.

                        I will have to use an old before picture but the result speaks for itself. Thanks for looking and furthermore thanks for all of the help!
