    Tire weights

Has anyone done a tire weight comparison. I know wheel weight is always crucial but why pay big buck for lightweight wheels only to have tires that are heavy as %^$^.

I am looking at doing 16" wheels on my M but also found a set of 17" to replace my last set. My last set Fikse FM10 with yoko avs sports (225 45 x 17 weighed 40lbs per wheel tire.

    Thanks,

    Tyler

Most companies list their tire weights on the spec sheet.

I've noticed Pirelli's are usually the lighter tires. Miata.net had a chart before, I just remeber in just the 15 inch tires same width and diameter I just don't remember the exact size but it varied by almost pounds from the lightest to heaviest.

Well if tires are heavy I guess it would be to offset it light rims rather than heavy tires and rims. You have different designs and compositions that can vary the weight of wheels considerably while tires aside from slicks, summer tires or run flats etc aren't too different.

The general consensus is to ignore tire weight. The weight is such a minor factor, far behind other performance charactertistics, that you shouldn't pay attention to it.

For example, the Toyo T1-S was traditionally the lightest tire around. Did it ever win any street tire competitions? Highly doubt it, tires that were 4-5lbs heavier could smoke it around a track.

True, but some people not tracking their cars could benefit from a lighter unsprung weight at each corner for DD-use.

As Mystikal mentioned, perhaps that SHOULD NOT be your only criteria for choosing a tire.
