    coilover question

I have an 85 325e with vogtland springs/ kyb struts right now.

I'm thinking of switching to ground control coilovers using my current springs.... the vogtlands are pretty soft though so idk if they would work too well. Also would the kyb's hold up being lowered anymore?

Anyone done this before with this set-up?

I would be modifying the strut tubes myself.

Also anyone have pics of slammed black early models?

Ground control uses 2.5" id springs. You can't use your old springs.

dump the kybs and get some bilsteins or konis.

We put my old (still in perfect working order) kybs on my brother in law's vert with the ground controls while we waited for his koni's to arrive... they sucked. The ride was soft and bouncy and we had the GC's spun nearly all the way up. I would stay away from them and just get a set of quality shocks/struts. It's better to wait and do it properly with quality components.

        kind of confused...

does ground control include the springs?? and i guess not the shocks?

What you posted there is only the springs and adjusters. You will need to order shocks/struts separately. GC also sells a complete kits for around 1500 that includes shocks struts camber plates RSMs and the springs and adjusters, basically a bolt on kit with your selected rates.

Ground control sells two types of kits:

            1. the "DIY coilover kit." This comes with ride height adjusters and springs, and is about $400. You've got to provide your own spindle/strut casing, and dampers. It's basically an alternative to buying off-the-shelf aftermarket springs, converting your car to run standardized racing coil springs and customize your spring rates and ride height.

            2. the full coilover kit. This is a direct replacement for springs, dampers, spindles and strut/shock mounts (strut mounts replaced with camber plates). Typically about $1500+.

The kit you're looking at will only replace your springs. Personally I'd get better dampers first; Bilsteins or Konis.

Yes GC's come with springs, that's why they ask you what spring rates you want. What you need to buy if you're not getting the complete strut/shock assembly from GC is shocks(Koni, Bilstein, etc.), camber plates and RSM's.

I'd just buy the whole kit, way better than buying everything seperately

Yeah, I've been piecing together a kit for awhile, and I think when all is said and done the whole thing is going to be $1200 or so, with some slightly used hardware and a lot of hunting around for deals on parts/springs, and not even the proper shortened top-adjustable Konis that come with the kit. If I could afford it, I'd just have gone for the kit in the beginning.

i will post pics after this weekend, cars first official outing at Bimmerfest in CA,

Basically you can lower the car to an extent where its undriveable, i have maybe one inch or more left on the perch at the front and the downpipe hits on those freeway catseyes when i change lanes.

The full write up and some pics are in this months PBMW mag, check it out.
