Anyone running 18" wheels?

I had some 18 Mille Miglia (sp) Spiders and I taco-ed two of them on a very small pothole. (It was a 01 Jetta GLX) that really made my day.

If you have a good quality forged wheel, getting bent up is less likely. Replicas, no names, and inexpensive wheels in general are soft and will bend easy.

That is true, these ADR look nice, but they are cheap. I never had any problems with them until now though. It was one of those things where you knew it was going to hit hard but there was nothing you could do. It was right around a blind corner I always go around and WHAM. Just the right angle and depth that it felt like I ran into a curb. Not that I know what that feels like ;)

A little late, but . . .

I am running 18's. I didn't plan on buying them, but I got a set with mounted and balanced Conti Extremes for $400 new. They became my favorites pretty fast. The picture attached is the only one I can find at the moment, which doesn't show the wheels much. They looked pretty good and they were very solid in the turns.

BUT . . .

I am actually here tonight looking for new ideas for 17 inch rims. The roads are pretty good around here, but all it took was small 4 inch wide trench on the road that a work crew did not quite filled up. It was filled with dirt so they could finish the next day. I didn't take much to totally hose the two on the right side of my car. I came around a corner pretty fast, and before I even saw it, WHAM WHAM. Not cool for sure. I think if I would have had 17 inch rims I might have been ok with the little extra tire, hard to say. You can see that the wheels are bent, but I can feel it when I am driving. I took them in and tried to have them re-balanced on one of those new balancing systems and they were pretty bad.

So longer story short, I am thinking about going back to 17 inch. So, if you do get them, watch for curbs, potholes, etc, because they will all hose your wheels pretty easily.

But isn't it usually dictated by what tire manufacturers offer? Only reason I want to go 17" is so I can run 245/255 tires in the proper aspect ratio. So, in this case, I do need to go TALLER to run WIDER.

How else do you propose to get 285s on an E30?

You don't need a TALLER wheel to run a WIDER tire. You need a WIDER wheel to run a WIDER tire.

You can run 285s on a 14x12 for all they care.

I can't find a picture of it, but here's the PDF article. It's the Auto Werks E30 M3 that is featured in the latest issue of Bimmer. It has 18" E46 M3 wheels on it (which would require 5-lug swap, obviously), but it has a couple of good pictures. Whoever scanned the article didn't do a great job. :|

But there aren't many out there that can. The style of wheel is a big variable too.
