17"x7" offset???? help plzzzzz

Hey I bet there are tons of these threads and I looked around a little, but I do not really understand offset. I would like to know if I will be able to run a 17x7 rim with a 40mm offset? will i need spacers? I also found the same wheel in a 25mm offset and they say direct fit to an e30, but they are $140 more $$$. Will the 40mm offset fit? or is 25mm a much better fitting wheel. ( my car is not lowered right now but I would like to use bilstiens and hr sports in the near future)
