    Cost of having tires dismounted

I have a set of the uber-rare BBS RK 16x7's. When I bought them they had balled tires on them. I want to dismount the tires, and polish them up, and possibly sell them as I have my eye on different wheels.

Will a tire shop take tires off for cheap if I'm not buying new tires or balancing or anything like that? Dont want to spend a lot of money to do this.

Anyone know from experience if this is something I can have done for cheap?

Any pointers for making sure they aren't too rough on the cast aluminum? Special type of mount / dismount machine?

    Thanks

Typically if you go to the bigger tire place like big brand or firestone or americas tire they have better mounting machines, on top of that you EXPRESSLY tell them that your rims are VERY rare and nothing can happen them show them that they are in perfect condition- they will take special care because they know you are going to inspect them afterwards.

If you have such expensive wheels don't be cheap bring them to a reputable shop. That uses a teflon guide or a non touch machine that Hunter makes.

cool, I'll call around and ask about the non-touch or teflon guide machine. That sounds like a good way to go. Sucks that I live in a town that almost all tire/wheel shops cater to bling bling truck/suv wheels. Just don't want to spend too much as it might be difficult to recoop more cost out of the set and still be attractive to possible sellers.

well I called around, most places said they didn't have a setup like that. Called the discout tire / america's tire place. They told me that they can break the bead "touchless" but the removal tool is still a good ole' rimclamp, which apparently everyshop in town uses. Whatever for 4 bucks a wheel they took off the tires, and another 2$ each for tire disposal. 24 and change for all four, and although they had some brute assistant manager working hard on the stiff sidewall azenzis, they got em off without incident. Made me sweat watching them though.

I know what you mean about watching the guys man handle you rims. I seriously almost stopped my local shop a few times because I thought they were getting to rough. Now, with the same rims, I just take them anywhere . its really hard to mess a rim up beyond repair, I hope.

If you have a short and stiff sidewall the tires can be a pita to dismount sometimes. Getting that top bead is the hardest part. Sometimes you have to be a *little* rough with them but as long as youre careful and take the precautions the rim shouldnt get scratched. And usually... if youre sweating about the rims, the guy doing the job is sweating about 10x as much lol at least in my case anyways.

                  wtf...

you ballers pay top dollars... go to SAMS club... they have like 5 mounting machines... they will take the off for free... and mounting and balancing anything above 50 is 9 dollars...

Its machine balance its not too much human error unless theyare moronic.

if you know what you are doing, you wont scratch wheels even if you use levers and clamps. Just about the worst wheels you will ever encounter are old motorbike wheels, the chrome and the paint is usually so soft, if you sneeze in its direction it flakes off, but if you know where to lever, and you know where to space the foot, its a breeze.
