Snow Tires... anyone have any experience with em?

I plan on driving my car through the winter. My dad likes to steal my Jeep during the winter, which defeats my purpose of having one, but thats besides the point of this thread. I want to know if anyone runs snow tires on their bottlecaps or any other wheels with their E30s. If so, how well does it compare to regular all seasons?

Also, if you should have any recommendations for snow tires, please let me know. Thanks!

I ran snow tires last year. And had two sets of big block mopar heads for weight in the trunk. Did not really have a problem, but we didn't get that much snow up here either. This year i got all seasons, I'll see how they do, Whenever it desides to snow here.

I run snows on bottlecaps and don't have any problems. I don't think I'd want to run all seasons here though. Mine are Kumho's, cheap but decent.

I just ran some Kuhmo Ecsta Summer tires in the snow...BAD idea... NO TRACTION. I am getting a set of blizzaks soon for my Bcaps.

Nice to hear that you guys run them in the snow without many issues.

Can anyone further describe what its like driving with snow tires in the slush/snow? Does it bite immediately? How does it compare to running summer tires in the rain I guess? Basically, what is the traction like? How easy is it to lose control, get wheel spin, etc.?

I run Blizzaks on my A4 and they are great winter tires.

I also ran Dunlop M3 Winter Sports on my GTI and they were great also.

Snow tires are key. They are by far superior to all seasons in the snow.

That will depend on everything, driving snow tyres on dry concrete makes them wear really quickly.

I drive 40 000km's/year that makes like 10 000km on snow tires, usually I get 2 or 3 season with one set.

Non stud snow tires are very elastic, once rubber gets hard tires have bad traction on any surface.

One donut on tarmac will melt the tips of "traction flaps" and tires are ruined and most snow tires have low maximum speeds, driving just a little period faster that the max speed will do the same.

Because of the road conditions over here(icy 3 months, no salt), I usually use studed snow tire, IMO they work better with RWD cars.

EDIT: I prefer Nokian tires,but that's just me.

Year before last, we had Wal-Mart studded snow tires on my wife's 89 325i, and they were awesome! They were super knobby (they looked like rally tires) and had great studs, and they were only like $54 each. You really don't need to go blowing a ton of money on high-end, name brand tires for winter tires.
