    Goofy tire rotation question?

Noticed the other day my inner tire edges were wearing pretty badly (not really shocked or surprised, I'm currently running 17's) car's properly aligned and all, but seems sad to have to eventually replace all four 'cause the edges will be showing threads and the centers and outer edges have so much life left.

They're directional tires, but can you swap left side for right side and vice versa by actually taking them off their rims and mounting them on opposite side rims?

I don't know the correct terms, but if your tires have just arrow which marks the rotation, then you can, but if you have tires that say "left" or "right" then you can't, such tires are quite rare, but do exist.
    Current:

    BMW 325i Cabriolet 2.5 m50 -88
    BMW 316i touring 1.6 m40 -90
    BMW 320i 4d 2,2 m54 -01

That's a good point. In general, the answer is yes, you can swap them off the wheels.

To clarify what Rocla said, if your tires are both asymetrical and directional, then you can not do this. You will know this by the tire stating that it can only be on one side. Don't confuse this with some tires (I know Toyo does this) that say right or left on opposite sides of the tire.

If you have questions, let me know what tire you have, and I'll research it.
