If your car needs maintenance work done, take care of that first before optional things.
If your tires are bald, then that becomes a maintenance item.
As for tires, I just bought BFG Traction T/A H tires in 195/65/14 and I'm very happy with them for a "high performance" all season tire. Tirerack.com has them for $62, good price. -
Yeah, quite stiff. Of course it wont be as good as a summer only performance tire, but if you want an all season tire, the Traction ta is very good. Check out the reviews of it at tirerack.com, it's got very good reviews.
After driving in the rain last night, I can say they're very good in rain and big puddles and way better than the rock hard old POS tires I used to have on. Smoother, less thumping over train tracks, and the steering feels so much more precise.Comment

I'd go with some 205/60/14's on those weaves. Just a little extra meat, they look good.Comment

I have Pirelli (P6 IIRC) 195/60/14, recently replacing Goodyear 195/65/14.
I expected the shorter sidewalls to be stiffer, and instead they are noticably softer.
I wanted all season M+S tires, as the e30 gets snow duty and a Z3 is the warm weather car. Even so, there are better all-around choices than this tire.Comment

If you are going to go with a 60 series over a 65 then you need to bump up to a 205 over the 195 to make it look right. A 195/60-14 would be smaller than original size and not real sure if a 195/60-14 is even availableComment

195/60-14 are available I just wasn't sure since it has been 15 years since I have even looked at a 14" tire MY BAD !!!Comment
