how to de-chrome a chrome wheels

I just picked up a set of Chrome wheels for my E30. First I am not a good friend of chrome, secondly, the condition of the chrome terrible.

I want to remove the chrome and just paint it back in silver.
I use paint stripper to strip paint off from a painted wheel before. I wonder if it will work on chrome surface.

    Any tips??
