I know 225/45s will fit, but there are a whole lot more tire options with 205/50.
fenders are rolled, car is an 90 325is with e30 m3 5 lug and turner j stock.
    can i go with either?

Yes. I chose a falken 225/45 as its got a little narrower tread patch than most 225's. Plenty of clearance. I wouldnt like the look of a 205 stretched onto an 8. But thats just me.

is the difference between a 225/50 and a 225/45 really big enough to get major rubbage?

        Depends on the specific tire.

        edit-
Didnt see the "225/50" That will not be your friend. 205/50, or 225/45. Remember its an 8" wheel. 205's will be stretched.

          225/50/16 is not E30-friendly.

There are more choices in 205/50 than 225/45, but there are good ones in 225. Like the KDW2, FK-452, or SPT.
