different size spacers front to rear?

pardon the newb sounding question, but what are the possible ill effects of running 10mm spacers on the front and 5mm spacers on the rear?

depending on the offset of the wheels nothing at all.

same offset wheels. basically my stance would be 5mm wider in the front on each side than in the rear. what are the downsides to this?

Probably a slight move towards oversteer than understeer (wider rear track = understeer, so I am thinking if front is wider would be the opposite?). Maybe also uneven tire wear, but that's a given anyway on front vs. rear of the car..

          just throwing some ideas out

5mm per side won't be an issue. I've been running 15mm front and 20mm rear spacers on my E21 for 4000 miles and it's no different than the stock setup.

I have bigger spacers on the rear than on the front.

20mm in the rear and I think 17mm on the front or something?

Not sure, I would have to ask Erik again.
