Need advice on purchase

Hi guys,
I'm an aussie r3v member, coming over to the states for a driving holiday with my girlfriend, im planning on buying a car in San Fran and driving to new york over a few months.
I have been looking at a few cars online and came across a few e34's around my price range 3-4k,
I only know e30's and the relative costs of buying and maintaining down here in Australia.
is this worth a look or should i forget i and get a camry ect

Here in the states all the good deals are found on craigslist - http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites

Id pick up a 525i with the m50 and just drive it. Theres a ton for sale local to me for under $2500

Touring is hard to find here in the states around me. Not sure for other areas. How easy are they to find down under?
