Had this popping up along with a "code tacho" message since I got my car. I had noticed a slightly slow crank but never thought anything of it.
Yesterday, my car wouldn't fire. It turned over, but would not fire. When I got home that evening I hooked up the jumper cables to aid the slow turn and had my wife crank it so I could diagnose why it wouldn't start.
It fired right up on the cables. Sweet. Drove straight to wally world for the cheapest battery I could find, and was disappointed that they had no listing for the E34. Though they had one for the later model. I took some measurements, went out to the car and everything matched up. Only difference is a higher CCA rating.
Anyway, installed the new battery, and haven't had a single message display since.
I thought I would share this, because it seems to be a common issue (check control) that some may be spending more money than needed to repair. Even though they only had one battery that would fit, and it still hit me with a $110 bill.
