Front Wheel Hub Bearing? Bearing Replacement?

One of my friends I talked to, told me to remove the unit and bring it to a shop and just have a new bearing installed. Is this ok or do I need a whole new unit?

    Thanks all

For which car? It's probably cheaper to go pull a whole unit from the wrecking yard. I got one for $60 with the Bilstein intact.

Whole new OEM unit would be the best option. I really do not think the bearing can be replaced in the hub...

I just bought 2 brand new hubs with the bearings in them for $158. Took about an hour to swap them and its like driving a brand new car.

For all the time messing around its just easier and just as cheep to buy new one's

First time I ever hear about replacing the bearings on an e30 hub. Let us know if it works.

I think you are confusing "hub" and "spindle"

the hub bearing assembly presses into the spindle/strut housing assembly

Not possible. The design uses the machined surface of the hub as the outer bearing race. It wears out and the whole hub needs to be replaced. Putting a fresh inner race and balls in a worn out hub would not work for long.

I know this thread is about the front bearings, but I had a rear bearing replaced back in October. A machine shop removed the old bearing from the hub and pressed a new one in. It's been working great so far, it sounded like a helicopter was following me before, and now it's quiet as a mouse and smooth as butter.

Rear bearing replacement is very common. I did mine last Fall after I was tired hearing a constant humming. But as was said, e30's front bearings and hubs are one assembly that is changed all together. On older cars such as 2002s, Coupes,Bavarias, e12s, e23s and early e24s, then the bearings can be tightened by hand if a bit loose (conical bearings) or races and bearings can be replaced.

I'm doing everything in one shot so I wana do this right. I've ordered inner an outer tie rods, New lower an upper ball joints, control arm, KYB struts, F&K 60/40 springs and now all I have left is the HUB so where can I pick up one for a decent price? Any of you guys know where I can pick up a new one for under 100 shipped?

I recently did my front wheel bearings (last week). I also found the best price for OEM replacement of hub assembly at turner motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com/ cost $104 each.. most important you will need a torque wrench that torques over 200 lbs.

Addition: Naplm00 wanna do my control arm bushings? I am going to attempt it this weekend...I don't have those fancy tools that you got = (

Sorry it took me so long to get back. I bought them from www.fcpgroton.com. They sell stuff on ebay but it is a little cheaper to go straight though them

                              Driver -

Funny you should post this, as I had just responded to a similar thread in the General Tech section on here....

Just an FYI - the front bearings are integral to the hub assembly - they come as a single unit (hub bearing assembly). if you remove the assembly from the vehicle, the actual bearings cannot be replaced, the entire hub assembly has to be replaced as a single unit.

Here is an excellent tech thread as to how to replace the front bearings (this applies to both 325 and 318 E30's, excluding XI's as I'm not sure about their front suspension assembly). There is also VALUABLE additional info I posted within the LAST POST of the below thread that WILL save you money, time & headaches!!! Be sure to check that last post of the below linked thread BEFORE buying your parts/tools and starting the job! The info in the below thread contains some great advice for those needing to replace their front bearings....

best of luck - the job is easy!
