new member saying hello.. 87 325

Hi I just bought this car. It's beat up, 223k miles, 5 speed. It runs but needs a muffler and some parts replaced.

But hey it's my little project car.

Question... what is the wheel/tire size I need to look for? I know bolt pattern is 4x100, and wheels size? Can I get something a little bigger? It looks like Toyota size will work too lol?

    Thanks!

I guess I should say something about myself.

    I've been a BMWCCA member since I bought new a 2002 M3 SMG.. then had a 2002 745Li.

But most of my *notable* cars have been Porsches:

    2001 Porsche 996 turbo yellow
    1999 Porsche 996 c2 aero red
    2000 Porsche Boxster S yellow
    2001 Porsche Boxster S silver
    1986 Porsche 944 turbo
    2003 Mitsubishi Evo
    1999 Jaguar XJR

I've sold them all except for my 996 C2.

I really like the E30 style and found a deal I couldn't resist so I picked it up this past Sunday. I hope to get it modded, painted, and someday be trackable. I like going to DEs with the Porsches and would be nice to have another car to bring.

as long as the lug pattern is 4x100, you can go all the way up to 18's. the standard offset for a 15x7 wheel is et24. the wider the wheel, the lower the offset needs to be. if you get wheels with an offset higher than et30, you may want to consider getting 5-10mm spacers so you don't rub at full-lock and also for the looks of the stance. since you mention toyota i am guessing some toyota sizes are 4x100, but ET40 or so. as long as you have a proper spacer they can work.

the proper tire diameter for your car is 195/65-14 on those wheels. use a tire size calculator online to determine what size would be necessary for other wheel sizes.

hmmmmm no.. just try to find e30 or VW mk1 or mk2 golf wheels with the correct hub bore (57.1), 4x100 mm, offset of et 15-25

Overall looks like a good start and since clearly you have the monetary funds looking at your other cars I look forward to seeing what you do with project! Welcome to the e30 life.

it would smart to let him know what "plastics" actually are since this is his first e30.

He means plastic bumpers from the later model cars.

                ^^^ Read: PITA

Front swap is easy, but rear is a lot of fiberglass work.

                    Perfect project car right there.

If you are gonna think about racing, check out Spec E30 over on your side of the country.

Good stuff, loads of fun, and fairly cheap to do.

                    Welcome to R3V!

thanks guys. Yeah had no idea what plastics was.

I can do small things myself, but most of the hard stuff I'm gonna get a shop to do :)

Stuff like timing belts, water pumps, swapping shocks/springs/bushings...hell, damn near everything is really simple on these cars.

I think this may have been the last BMW intended to be worked on.

really.. so you think I can tackle a 327i upgrade myself?

Note the most complex thing I've done is Short Shift Kit install in my Porsches, and changing Rotors/Brakes.

Thats because your car isn't an 87. It's an 89 or 90. That has the wrong title or wrong date on the title.

I would say that swapping a bottom end (basically what you would do) is about a 6 on the 1-to-10 difficulty scale.
