    '87 325e Value

Hey guys, looking for a daily beater to replace my M3. I know this sounds like a noob question, but having looked around the prices for E30 are really ALL over the place. The ones I've been looking for in CT are "overpriced" compared to others I've seen.... anyway.

I found this, '87 325e 5 spd Coupe with 155k miles, Red on Black interior. Having spoken to the owner, the car was given to him and he has not driven in much at all or performed any maintenance. Thus is has no idea about when the timing belt/water pump has been changed and other maintenance items. Exterior wise, supposedly no rust.

From what I understand the only problems with the car are the brakes (they work), rear ones making noise and a missing glovebox. Both of which I'm not to considered with.

I'm going to have a look at it monday... he's asking $2k for it. I'm just looking for a reasonable range of worth, as I see it can't be worth more than $1.5k. THanks.

any comments... Honestly I know its a hard question to ask, just want to make sure its in the right ballpark. Another member has advised me I question the glove boxes disappearance. From the phone conversation with the owner, he doesn't seem to know much about the car or drive it and got it as payment IIRC.

He'll be coming by our shop monday to take a look at it, anything in particular to look for (E30-esque), other than the general things.

Other than general things I would check...

        - steering rack (commonly leaks)
        - subframe bushings (commonly worn, no fun to replace. To test, go on and off throttle at crusing speed and listen for a clunking noise coming from in front of rear wheels)
        - door/trunk locking system (commonly problematic; may or may not apply to particular model)
        - motor mounts (this is a must replace on the pre-1988 E30s; If one fails the motor will slide over when turning right and the PS pump or alternator can slice into the lower radiator hose, leaving you stranded)
        - transmission leaks (seal leaks are common, check when engine is warm)
        - oil pan leaks (common, check when engine is warm)
        - wheel bearings (commonly worn, listen for consistent clicking noise at low speed)

Those are the main problems I've dealt with on my 200,000+ mi 325es. Being a non-sport model with no maintenance records and 150k+ I would have to agree that it's not worth more than $1500.
