So I found a '99 M3 'vert for way under value (at a fairly legitimate dealer, no less), and checked the "free" carfax (where it tells you how many records are available, and then asks you to buy a real carfax) and it came up with 0 records. VIN decoders show it goes to the right car, and I'm thinking maybe this thing was a salvage car? If I recall, there are a few states out there that don't have salvage titles, or something like that, so if you register a salvage vehicle in that state, it basically wipes it clean. I'd still think there would be a carfax record, though. Anyone ever seen anything like this, or familiar with what the scam could be?

No, I don't think so. The Carfax doesn't say VIN not found, it says 1999 M3, Convertible, 3.2L L6 FI DOHC 24v, Germany, 0 Records in Our database. I love how it still says at the bottom:
"IMPORTANT! The 0 records on this 1999 BMW M3 may confirm a clean title history or uncover potential problems. Find out by ordering the CARFAX Vehicle History Report."
Oh, and Autocheck doesn't have any records either, although I assume they draw from the same information, so no surprise there.sigpic
