    Question...

    Okay so,

    I picked up a automatic 89 325is and had a few questions.

The tachometer only goes to 5000, I thought 325is had the 7000 rpm tach? Is it because it's auto?

The speedo does not work at all and the gas gauge goes crazy.

It has a rough idle and when I rev it, when it comes back down the rpms dip and sounds like it will die but it catches.

Lastly, the car is really slow LOL...

either its a 325e or someone swapped the cluster. the idle dipping than catching could be the car running rich, whats the temp gauge at when this happens? have you tried replacing anything?

No have not replaced anything, the title says it's a 325is but is there a way I can check the vin?

It does it cold, I actually have not even let the car warm up yet. I just picked it up the other day with a trailer and only moved from trailer to garage. Just took a lap around the neighborhood (no tags)

when the engine is cold it is sending a lot more fuel than normal, I wouldn't be super worried about hesitation when the engine is cold, check if it also hesitates when fully warmed up.

haha, you guys think seafoaming this mother fucker will help? i've had some great success with it in the past but never on an an engine / car this old LOL

why would someone swap to an ETA cluster?? lol

do you think getting a whole different cluster all together (the proper one at that) will help with my gauge issues? (speedo, gas gauge... etc)

lastly how do i check for vac leaks or rather... where are the most common leaks at?

Get on it hard. Will the tach go past 5k or does it bounce off of a 4500rpm limiter?

If it's really an eta then a) you kind of got jipped and b) that explains why it's so slow. automatic etas aren't exactly speed demons, hell 325i 5 speeds are ok but nothing special.

Check your ABS relay, should be the polished silver relay hanging under the steering column. I'm told this is the most common fault in the ABS system.

Could be a wheel speed sensor as well.

Or a bunch of other things.

Really just go out and buy a Bentley manual. It's well worth the $30, and you'll learn a lot about your car in the process.
