    Feedback on BMW GT1 Scan?

Is this a OEM BMW Scanner or part of the scanner they use for all the new BMW's to reprogram and what not? I'm looking to buy a BMW scanner with out goign crazy expensive as the Generic BaumTools I had (iScan) was stolen.

I heared the GT1 does all the scanner from a regular BMW dealer does, is this true?

    Thanks

yes but they are very expensive!! There are some IBM's that are on ebay for a couple thousand that do something similar, I don't know how updates work for those.

      You mean this one?

It doesn't lookk like it is the OEM BMW scanne that any BMW dealer use (never seen one before except my old school Modic) so I'm unsure how does it look like compared to this one in the link. I tell you this because checkign the specs, it certainly does read most models of BMW up 2007 I think, but reprogram quite past models and not so new models wich worry me.

This kit w/o laptop on ebay I'm seeing goes under 1K wich is not expensive for me for what it does. But still I'm unsure if this is a good ticket or worth it.

Ha, I know the answer to this! GT1 is BMWs old scaner now they use SSS and they are going to ISIS soon. That one is a pc version that runs in a virtual machine shell.

I don't know what all that means tho.

Cool! In that case, the same unit in yuor dealer does diagnose most models but doesn't reprogram most models, (i.e. doesn't do the e90-92) right? What else are you using to scan and reprogram latest models?

Also do you know what are the main differences between BMW GT1, BMW OPS and BMW OPPS and their costs? How does this thing get vehicle software from factory to repgram the modules with a revised-updated software from, well, factory?

            thanks!

the GT1's on ebay are just chinese clones with stolen software. Not really a big deal, but you are not getting the legit deal. I have read up on them, and I haven't really seen any issues with them.

The IBM's that come with it are "locked" to the GT1, you cannot use another laptop unless you run it in VMWare (which people sell that "version" on ebay as well) I have heard issues with stability doing that, probably something you don't want when you are re-flashing.

SSS is the diagnostic software they still use, Progman is for flashing. The OPS is the new tool, but only works on e62 and later stuff.

for new cars bmw rolled out a brand new system, I forget its name, I do know the techs complain that it is still more buggy than the old system (I just work weekends as a lot attendant). I also heard that we may have to send back all our old diagnostic equipment to bmw where it will more than likely be destroyed. However I can't confirm this. And YES I did ask, and NO I can not buy the old equipment off them.

I see, so I need the dman laptop anyways? And you now how do I make for the support for newer updates , not jsut for the firmware, but also updates for modules of the car?

Saske30, thanks for the input. I guess I will have to try the GT1 and see what it can do in realitty. I do have OEM Chrysler StarScan scnner , it's not cheap, but I need to have it since we work with Jeep-Dodge & Chrysler vehciles (dealer) but also we work ocassionally with BMW's therefore, looking for a non expensive alternative to scan em!

There's some sites that have newer software and more info on how to upgrade, but coming across new stuff is kinda hard www.torrents.ru was the only place I could get new software. Most of the shit on ebay is already pretty dated.

It would really depend on what cars you work on, if you are working on a lot of new new stuff then updates would probably be more of an issues, but if its all like e36, e46 etc I don't think there's a whole lot of new updates out.

The versions get super confusing as well, DIS v55 I think is the newest (actually it might be 56) Progman I believe is version 3.1, I know some people sell version 4.4 or something like that, but to my understanding thats not right. The base version is 3.1 with update 4.4 or something like that, I'm trying to recall all of this from memory, I just know that the version shit for progman is confusing as hell.

I wish I didn't lose all my bookmarks, I know theres an e46 forum (maybe e46fanatics.com) that going pretty in depth about module updates. www.openecu.org I think has some good info, god there is another really good site but I can't think of the name for the life of me, it was just for BMW ecus and mainly was for the GT1 and OPS scanner. If I think of it I will let you know

                    edit:

that one site could have been e90post.com
