    distributor failure?

so i started my 84 318i yesterday , it ran for 4 seconds and then died. i tried a restart, and the engine turned over fine but seemed like there was no spark. took the cap rotor and dust shield off and it looks like the wires that coil around had come loose, they werwe sticking all over. i also found a magnetic peice of metal in there along with some paper stuff. i am assuming this is what my problem is.

so here is my question, i have a second m10 that i can remove the distributor from, only prob is that it was loose and has been turneed a bit. i know that befor i remove the one on the car i need to have the number one cylinder at TDC, by lining up the centre of the rotor with the marrk on the distributor housing, how can i do this with the other engine since the housing has moved, therefore when i put the new housing into the car it will not be in exactly the same orientation as the old one? any hints before doing this?, any warnings , ideas etc? thanks for any help, i need to do this tommorow so i am hoping someone will chime in.
    cheers

just remember where it is at on YOUR car , the one you are fixing.

When you put the good one in, put back in the same orientation.

Time with a timing light, done.
