    Royally Screwed Over..

A little background. A friend bought an e30 some time back with the intention of making it a track rat. Seller had lost the title, so they did a bill of sale and filled out the paperwork for a replacement title. We just got back from the DMV and found out the car was not registered since 2006 and even worse, the seller was not the registered owner. It was actually owned by a lien company. The fines to get a temporary permit totaled $550 and he now has to deal with the lien company to finalize everything. Ironic thing is that he bought the car for $500. He's been calling the guy for the past 2 hours and ofcourse no answer. I figure his best chance to recoup his money might be small claims court or something like that. Honestly I was as shocked as he was when the lady at the dmv told him the situation.

*I know he should have made sure he could get a title before buying(big mistake)

I have no idea other than small claims for him to get his money back. Any legal heads got any ideas?

You need to ask a lawyer. Not a bunch of people on a car forum. This type of thing can get you seriously fucked over if you don't go about it right.
