M42 engine position management guidance request / Clutch replacement / 318is

(apologies if answer is posted elsewhere.. the search parameters on this question are tricky) (did make an effort)

Need advice about engine position management during clutch replacement on a ’91 318is. (not covered in Bentley manual)

    Mission:
    1) remove transmission from engine and not lose control of engine position when transmission is removed from engine. (have read that M42 engine will want to “rock forward”)
    2) Have engine remain at stable angle for re-engagement of transmission after clutch/flywheel operation

so far, the ‘steps of what I perceive’ are:
    1) support transmission with floor jack
    2) remove transmission mounts and transmission/engine assembly will tilt ‘back’
(I’ve come this far before during shift linkage maintenance and trans-mount replacement)

.. so I bring it to this point, then what? Should the motor be braced to retain position before removing transmission?

The motor mounts have been replaced with new OEM mounts. (several months ago but with zero driving miles)

How much caution should be involved? I’m mechanically inclined but have yet to pop my ‘transmission removal cherry’.
Is it dangerous for the M42 motor to be supported solely by motor mounts and coolant hoses?
I’d like to think I can get the job done using a scissors jack and a block of wood supporting the engine oil pan at a desired ‘tilt back’ angle. (intending to use my shop/floor jack for endeavors of transmission-removal/installation) (yeah- I know.. have fun with that)

Any advice/recommendations appreciated.. car is in garage, up (high) on stands

Support the engine on the oil pan. Shouldn't be too hard, when I did the clutch in my 325 I supported the engine with a jack rod lol

      cool cool. Thanks

i am both excited and nervous about doing this. it's been a long time coming..

.. which usually means my anal ass will do an admiral job- albiet one that takes four times the amount of time it takes for normal mechanic to perform.

I always pull the motor tranny pack out and do it on the floor. Alot easier to split and realign even though I have a lift and tall tranny jacks. I swear by it
Even though the tranny isn't that heavy and can be benched up there and aligned while laying on your back

It would be easier to pull the whole engine and do it, but at the same time a PITA, you have to drain the rad and take off the P/S pump, fuel lines, wiring. I mean it would be like an extra hour, but would be worth it on a 6 cylinder because thats a cock sucker to unbolt the trany while it's in there.
