LOL... As I mentioned, my 05 has a fair bit more room than any E39 I HAVE been in. Something else that is odd is Edmunds is not the end all of accuracy. The E53 X5 was the same vehicle other than the minor facelift in 05. The cargo area of an 02 and 04 should be the exact same.

With the correct tires the X5 in the snow or slick roads puts many American SUV/Trucks to shame. The DSC is incredible. yes if you have summer tires, it will be slick but i have been the douche in a chick car that never got stuck even with summer tires....

Have you ever driven or ridden in an X5?

So you can look like a total douche when you get stuck in 3" of snow on your summer tires.

Do you really want to be that douche in a chick car?[/quote]

You can believe whatever you want. It doesn't change the fact that the wagon is bigger.

According to another source the 97-00 E39 540IT the cargo volume is 14.5 cuFT.

          The 04-07 E61 550it has a cargo volume of 17.7 cuFT

          http://www.autoevolution.com/engine/...2007-550i.html
          http://www.autoevolution.com/engine/...1997-540i.html

According to the same source the 2000-03 E53 X5 and the 03-07, the cargo volume is 16.4cuFT.

          the 07+ X5 E70 has a cargo area of 21.9 cuFT

          http://www.autoevolution.com/engine/...-2003-30d.html
          http://www.autoevolution.com/engine/...-2007-48i.html

So, it is pretty clear that the E39 (97-03)has a smaller cargo area when compared to the same generation E53 (00-06). When the newer E61 was introduced it had a larger area than the X53 with an area of 17.7cuFT. In true updated vehicle fashion the E70 came in with a whopping 21.4cuFT. It looks as if the X5 has a larger cargo area with regards to the vehicles manufacturing run... E39<X53, X53<E61, E61<E70.

My assessment. Every X5 ever made has more cargo area than the E39 Touring, which was the point (or argument) in question.

Yeah I know that was with the seat sup. it is blatantly obvious. You do know the seats fold down as well.

So let me get this straight, Your saying the 540 wagon with the seats up has a 14.5 compared to the X5 with the seats up 16.4 and when the seats are down the 540 has more room all of a sudden?

The gov test is interesting but proves nothing. There is no X5 comparison. it does prove the X5 is smaller or larger so I am not sure where that came from.

I will ask this again, for the second time, have you ever been in an X5? Have you ever been in an E39? I own both. I can tell you right now that the passenger area, room in the X5 is larger than the E39 M5 I have. There is more room between the seat bolsters and the doors. (which others have expressed as well)The arm rest is substantially larger(wider) and the front and rear foot wells are larger(deeper). The entire cabin area of the X5 is larger than the E39, again I OWN both, I DRIVE both and I KNOW which one has more passenger room. When my kids car seat was rear facing it would hit the front seats in the M5 but it does not come close to the front seats in the X5.

Again, the X5 is wider and taller and has a similar cargo area length. If the X5 has a larger area with the rear seats up, the X5's height and width is not going to change and it will continue to have a larger area with the seats down.

Dude, not sure why you would be on start this discussion on this kids thread. He was asking about the X5, those of us that have them have commented. You are sitting hear making false claims that have been proven wrong by various websites and personnel experience. What information are you contributing other than the "don't be this Douche" or "chicks car" comments?

Oh and according to the extremely accurate GOV age, the X5 and E39 touring get the same gas mileage. LOL Based on experience.... they do not! My M5 gets better mileage than my X5 and I know for a fact the 540 gets better mileage than my M... Nice accurate link though. LOL

OP, if your're concerned with cargo size, and are open to getting a wagon, read the last several posts. Otherwise, go get yourself an X5 already. Used ones can be had on the cheap right now (with a warranty, too), put some snow shoes on if you're gonna drive in blizzards so you don't look like an assclown, skip the adjustable ride height option, and don't forget the Sport Package!

My brother had one a while back and he loved it so much that he bought another in a different color. I use to love driving that thing. To me that was the best handling SUV i've driven.

I had a X3 Diesel in Germany it was definitely a nice vehicle. When my wife and i were looking for vehicles the X3's were to small for us. We do a fair amount of road trips and with the dog, kids, car seats, carriages etc the 325xit we had filled up really quick and we were concerned the same would happen with the X3. On tp of that the interior styling seemed a bit cheasy. Very plasticy. I am really happy with our 4.8is, its a blast to drive...
