    attn: thule roof rack owners

couple questions before I toss mine on.

I got mine off ebay and the feet are in great condition but there is no rubber on the inside of the feet. Is there normally something thereto protect the paint? I figured I could try home_depot for a rubber strip to tape on the inside, but not sure what to look for exactly.

Also, is there a certain length the bars should be from each other?

I looked on thule.com and found instructions, but I am confused by them. It says that I have to use a screwdriver to REMOVE the locks? Wtf, someone explain to me what I do to lock these feet in. Currently the locks are in the knobs.

If I remember, I'll take a picture of the feet on mine later today when I get home.

No certain length that the bars should be from each other. Just whatever works for what you are carrying.

With the locks unlocked, you should be able to put a screw driver in the slot of the lock and twist it out of the hole to get rid of the locking function (not sure why you'd want to do that).

The bars can be any length. I think 44" is the most common for an e30, but I have 50" ones. There is a thick coating on the feet that acts as padding, although it can still marr the paint. What you do with the locks is screw them onto the bolt that clamps the foot around the load bar and the rain gutter. when they are snug, turn the key 180 degrees in the lock. You won't be able to loosen the feet with them locked.

when i had thule racks on my car this winter, the rubber strips actually messed up my paint a little bit. The one foot without the rubber strip on it caused zero marks. It was because the rubber strips flap a little bit and rub against the paint.

i cut up the extra gasket that comes with early model tail light gasket and folded it under the feet like a V.
