VDO vision gauges in stock cluster

I wasnt sure if this was a technical or cosmetic question orwhatever so if the mods think this is in the wrong section i apologize in advance....

alright... as we know the engine temp gauge in the stock cluster blows and isnt very acurate... so i want to get another gauge to mroe acurately measure the temp of the engine(coolantwise)...However the thing that pisses me off most if something not working correctly in my car... so unhooking the stock gauge and just running wires to a new gauge elsewhere is not an option...

so i was wondering if anyone has taken the temp gauge guts out of the stock cluster and replaced it with a 2 1/16" VDO vision temp gauge... and just run the new wired through the cluster.... would the rest of the stock gauges work with the temp gauge gone??? unfortunately i cant look at my own cluster since my car is at home and i am 500 miles away at school so any info or recomendations would be appreciated.... i think it would look pretty sweet to get a better gauge in there.... especially if it matched as well as the vision gauges do... does anyone think it can be done??? or how to do it??? or knwo if it has been done...

    thanks guys

my main concern is that the vdo gauge is deep... so i would need to cut a whole in the circuit bored behind where the gauge would sit.... in not sure what connections would be severed or whether or not this would permanently kill the cluster...
