      9/87 through 6/89 had ellipsoid headlights from the factory. That is my final answer.

      1991 325ic and 1991 318is

            They got rid of the ellipsoids after 89 when they introduced the airbag steering wheels. ;)

            Not exactly sure when they started, I would have to agree with the 88-89 comment though.

                        My 325is has a 6/87 build and had sealed beams.

                        The GFs 325i has a 3/89 build and has them.

                        Seems like it was a pretty random thing...dunno.
