Oh come on. Who doesn't like Slayer? I listen to thrash/speed/death metal like 40% of the time. It just has the ability to completely change your mood.
For me, I know a certain piece of music is really good if it gives me shivers when I hear it the first couple times - or everytime I hear it. There's just some Metallica (pre '90), Slayer, Pantera,... guitar riffs there give the chills everytime I hear them. It's the attitude, too.
There's just some certain bands that seem incapable of messing up or not sounding bad-ass. Tool mainly comes to mind.
