stuck on highway till 4am, cops give me a ride home!

84 318i has been running great, a little smoke from the exhaust, and i think the timing was advanced a bit too far but thats it. Have been running 91 octane whether i needed it or not. Driving home tonight i look down and my temp gauge is just creeping into the red. I pull over and shut it down right away. I look and i have major steam /smoke coming out from under the hood. Open it up and coolant is spraying all over the engine from the rad cap. I had just checked my coolant level and it was perfect, oil level was good, all fluids were good. What do you guys think happened? After it cooled down i checked the oil cap and no sludge , nice clean oil, looked in rad and nothing was left.
I refuse to start ripping things apart until i hear from my fellow e30 owners and get some good advice/instructions.
Please help, i love my car and right now its sitting 30km away waiting for me to go back and get it. The cops were nice enough to give me a ride home.
    cheers guys

sounds like a head gasket to me, if your cooling system was getting that pressurized. I would start there, and hope it's not a bigger problem.

I agree, head gasket. If you do change the head gasket make sure to get the head checked so you don't have the contact point uneven. Good luck bud.
