Has the jetta been well maintained? If so do the trade, because it doesn't sound like you are too attached to your e30. And if you dont really like it you could always sell it and get another e30 or e34.

I'm not sure what the specs on your car are, but I would check the value of the Jetta. If there is a chance to get the Jetta as an even trade and it is worth a decent bit more than what you have in the E30, go for it. If you are considering the trade, your E30 probably doesnt have any sentimental value to you. If there's a chance to make money in the deal, I would do it in a heartbeat.

      But that's me.
My cars pretty basic h&rs cheap tokico shocks m50 im working on the interior getting it all to match my MKII Recaros. I think my cars worth a lill under 5K. The blue book on the jetta is around 5400

I had 03 1.8t gti with basic mods (28mm rear sway, koni front/rear, revo/apr software to raise the boost) etc. It deff. wasn't SLOW, and the jetta really is the same damn thing with just another body. It seems like it's a hit or miss, I had some weird problems with mine and I bought it new, it started with dash lights flickering and it took many trips to the dealer under warranty to get it fixed. Then 5speed gave out, started with 2nd gear and then it won't shift into anything other than reverse and 4th or something dumb like that. VW replaced the tranny, and shortly after I traded it in after about a year for another vw (04 r32) and that car was 100% rock solid.

They are deff. comfortable and good DD cars, but I would make sure it's got a good history and doesn't have any issues. The 1.8t engines did suffer oil sludge issues as mentioned above. They can handle a LOT of boost and can be made FAST (stage 3 apr turbo/software and you are at about 300 wheel hp on 91+) but you'll deff want a quife or some other diff. They did have issues with window regulators (warranty stuff), coil packs (warranty). Other than that, if you need something bigger than the e30, I am sure you/your girl will be happier with the jetta/golf than the e30.

One more thing, insurance is going to be more expensive so get a quote.

Garrett... k04 is a small upgrade from k03. Local friend of mine has it on his 01-02 gti 1.8t and it's a rocket...but the car has many many other mods as it's very competitive in scca sm class and he is also an hpde instructor as well.

Take it to an Import or Euro shop to have a PPI done. They should be able to point out any major problems.

It's FWD, and sounds like you need a DD, I would leave it alone ;)
