    getting a key made??

I might be buying a e30 from a impound lot but he only probem is no key. I heard that a locksmith can make a key as long as i have the title which would have the VIN on it. Is this true? And what price am i looking at?

    thanks guys,
    Luke

go to the dealer with a copy of the title in your name and a copy of some ID-- and it will only cost a few dollars---- a locksmith isnt goiing to be able to get you a key with a VIN nr.

you can take the door lock cylinder (assuming the ignition hasn't been changed) to a reputable locksmith and they will make it for you. It'll cost like 20 bucks. Thats what I did a few years back.

if you have the title in your name, you can order a key from the dealer for like $20-$30.

Assuming that your doors, trunk, and ignition all match.. you can take the lock to the locksmith and they will cut a key for you. Approx. cost for me last time I did it was $40
Now that we assumed that it will work, you have to account for the fact that there are many e30's out there where all the locks don't match. :D
                Best of luck to you.

Exactly. I ordered a key from the dealer by the VIN/title and it only cost me $20-30. BUT, it didn't match the doors or the ignition cylinder. So, I ended up giving a set of spare cylinders to a lock smith to match them to the new key. The ignition lock cylinder can't be rekeyed so if it doesn't match the key you'll end up ordering a new cylinder.

                  my 2 cents.

i actually took in the trunk lock and the lock smith said that it wouldn't work and i need to take out the door lock because the trunk lock has no info on the core.

Make sure the locksmith uses a strong key.

My key pattern has a deep groove near the beginning of the key. My car did not come with an original key, so I have been using a cheap copy I got at a regular locksmith for a year. Three weeks ago it broke off in the ignition at that deep groove. The AAA locksmith couldn't get it out after an hour of trying, so I had it towed to a dealer. At first they only needed a replacement lock cylinder but then couldn't drill out the old one, so now I'm waiting on more parts to ship from Germany (I forget what they are), and it's going to be over $1000.

A new key coded to my VIN from the dealer will cost me $30 or $40. I'm told a regular locksmith uses softer, weaker keys to reduce wear and tear on their machines. If so the dealer's keys should be stronger.

The way I was attaching my keys to my person may have weakened the key as well.
