U.S. models had a support beam in the doors that Euro spec models did not. Then there's the obvious (and ugly) 84-88 "diving board" aluminum 5mph bumpers. Euro cars had the much more attractive and smaller version of the metal (=light steel, thanks Greg) bumpers, until the plastic ones were introduced for all models world wide.

Nope sorry these were steel but very light guage. Thinner safety glass.

        side markers.

Some countries required profile turn signal repeater. Citylights were just a european version of our parking lights only that they only required one side (the street side) to be on.

        Airbags

        Headlights are different

Taillights have a foglight in the rear.

Some go even farther. Belgium and France have a lot of regulations like tread not being outside the fenders and such.
        Im now E30less.

Edited! Didn't mean to specify "aluminum" again. Just meant metal, as opposed to plastic.

I'm still not sure what the deal was with airbags. Were they standard equipment on 90-91 US E30s? Only optional in Europe? What years? The more specifics the better for this kid's paper, right?

right now i am converting a 1994 chevy c1500 for european regulations. as far a converting a american speced car to european standards you need to:
have white parking lights in the outer most lens of the front of the vehicle
have orange flashing rear turn signals
have a tow hook front and rear of vehicle
have a "fog" light at rear of vehicle
vehicle cannot drive faster than speedo reads
                      Km hr on dash
                      NO side marker lights
the headlights have to be adjustable inside the vehicle- all vehicles after 1991
must have a spare tire if registered as a truck
must have european EURO approve red refectors--I guess the american ones arent good enough.
must have european pattern lights, but you can get a letter that that is not needed

When I had my Corrado I learned that starting in 1990 (I believe), American cars had to have some form of passive protection. A lot of manufacturers went the airbag route, VW went with automatic seatbelts and a beefy knee bolster which is why Canadian Corrados are sometimes sought after (regular seatbelts).

If you're writing a research paper you should actually look this stuff up, heh.

Interesting - what are you supposed to adjust?

you are supposed to be able to adjust the headlight up and down, like if you have a ton of crap loaded in the trunk.

Sounds like a helluva lot of work that needs to be done. Good luck with that.
