Rolling your own wiring harness

What is the automotive 'electrical' tape called and where can I get it? I don't want to use the regular electrical tape as it will melt and get all nasty, and heat shrinking is not an option either.

What's the factory wrapping called? Can that be purchased still?

The cloth type tape? You can get it from auto restoration catalogs.

There was someone selling it on ebay, I think you can get it from the dealer also. Part number I have no idea.

Napa/Kragen/AutoZone and the like probably won't even know what that is huh?

Nope. Try Year One, or other Muscle Car resto sites. I'd bet even Summit or Jeg's wouldn't have it.

Is that the stuff the OEM wiring harness is wrapped in? It is all goobered up in my car :(

I'd go with the plastic mesh stuff, if I had the option.

I'll do a custom harness later with good stuff :) Just needed something now to clean up the oem / 15 year old harness.

They make some stuff that is like a Chinese finger trap but its made of plastic we used it on a Jaguar it works well under the hood and looks really nice. It is not split loom. We got it at http://www.delcity.net they should have what you are looking for.

Yeah, that's the stuff I was talking about. Computer power supply manufacturers wrap their wiring harnesses with it.. it's super clean and has absolutely no chance of getting sticky.

over on e30 tech a sweedish gentleman has gone above and beyond on his restoration of his e30 with an m30.
On post 244 he mentions that he;

"retaped the wiring using original TESA tape
Nice to not get all sticky from old tape glue when workning with the wiring..."
