We have a 2000 5.9L V8 GC at work.
Nice ass interior let me tell you, almost seems out of place in that rig.
Its got more then enough power to move itself along too.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

The 5.9 was only for the 98 model year, although their may have been a few leftovers into 99. It's basically a GC limited with a big honkin' Ram Magnum engine in it. Big, heavy, loud and very torquey.
The GC's are decent overall, but have some notorious QC issues, I know on the 6 cyl models, the trannys go out at about 60-70k intervals, and they have a lot of issues with fuel pressure sensors and crank sensors on the motors, not so sure if the 8's have the same issues.
I'f you're really looking to go 4x4ing in one, I'd probably look more at a cherokee than a GC, due to the solid axles rather than the independant setup.

GC's have live axels front and rear.... just like the smaller cherokee.....
the GC comes with a much better transfer case and i think the 2000 or 2001 came with the quadradrive2.... it transfers 80% of the torque to one wheel instantly.
the 5.9 limited is a bad ass truck... pillow top leather seats soooo comfy, and they will go anywhere you want them to

how man people have owned grand cherokees? well I have, and we still have it. 93 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2. Had it since new, 32000 out the door. quadratrac sucks of course, but this has been one of the best suvs to serve its time. We have 196k miles on it. Stock tranny is still in but is in need of rebuild. Transmissions are the weakest link on these things as with all chrysler vehicles. The motor is strong and runs like a champ. It pulls great, we pulled 24 foot snowmobile trailer at least 30k miles alone on it. It is very good off road, with the limited slip rear. I have never had ours stuck. Average mpg is about 16 if your on the highway a lot. expect close to half that with a 5.9 if your on the gas.
the 5.9 has loads of power, but like i mentioned, it is a fuel sucka. If you can find a jeep that is not abused they are very nice vehicles. Unfortunately (like im my case) you need to own from new to really know the condition.Old and improved:

End of story.

5.2 is a 318 ci v8. the 4.0 is the (agreed) jerky 6. Dont have much experience with them so cant comment. I would take an 8 over the 6 anyday even though its basically the same motor made back in the 60s. Our 5.2 is the non magnum with 220 hp 235 ft lbs. The 5.9 (360) has 245 hp but 345 ft lbs.
tow package vehicles tend to be equipted with an oil cooler, heavy duty radiator, overdrive on/off switch, and a lsd 3.73, not to mention nice hitch and wire reciever.
like rob said about working on them; wheel bearings seem to have shortened life spans, front sway bar mounts like to break, and drivelines rarely last. Not much else i can think of.Old and improved:
