The material quality has increased, as has component quality, not to mention the technology behind it. I do have to say that some of the newer models aren't all that aesthetically pleasing to me, but I'd buy one more for what it can do than what it looks like.
And hell, with colors like "Alpine White" you can't go wrong ;)1988 325iC - "Betty" - Daily Driver/Project Car.
1993 318i - "The Golden Dream" - Dad's Car.
1995 318ti - "Hellrot" - R.I.P.

every dell laptop I have had has been horribly built, including the current ones that are shipping, including that crazy XPS thing. I am tired of laptops flexing when I pick them up, creaking when I close the lid, and frankly I am TIRED of having to tighten the hinge on every dell laptop I have ever dealt with. Plus its easier then trying to call india to have some nobrain come to my house and attempt to fix it.
IBM on teh other hand, rock solid laptops, VERY well built, as well as Apple.
Plus, your world class support? I had dell REFUSE to replace my 24X CDRW drive in my laptop because I didn't have the Dell supplied version of Windows XP installed, I talked to about 5 people including a supervisor before I said fuckit and bought my own drive.
On my Inspiron 7000 they accused Windows XP of causing the DVD drive to fail, I finally lied and told some other guy that I had 98, and BSed my way through his diagnosis to get the drive replaced.
No thanks

As for calling India, I doubt you'll have that issue anymore.
What I've seen, in my time here, is that if a user has an issue with build quality, most often than not it's what the user does with the system that causes the issue.1988 325iC - "Betty" - Daily Driver/Project Car.

I messed with a 9200 at one of those dell stands when I was in portland, didn't impress me one bit, and still felt cheap

My personal experience with Dell sucks...I worked for an integrator and we many times had to configure Dells for our customers because that was their PC standard at their facilities. With 80% of the Dells we received (straight from Dell, no less) ended up with a component failure within a week or two of receiving it (harddrives and video cards the most). The bitch of it was is that Dell wouldn't take our word for what was wrong with one and always insisted on sending someone to diagnose the problem and then (and only then) order the replacement part; unnecessary delay. We used Gateways and Gateway always took our word for what was wrong (if anything) and would ship us the replacement part immediately with a return label for the defective part. IBM and Compaq would also do the same; Dell never would no matter what our qualifications were and/or how obvious the failure was (i.e. a bad harddrive is a bad harddrive; no mystery). If you know anything about PC's you may not want to wait for their diagnosis (if you have any troubles); if you don't, then you'll probably love it.
