Early model 318i's had the M10. Late model 318i's had the M40 and 318is's had the M42.

Just to show you why I though I'd ask for some help from people I'd expect not to get all offensive.... yes wiki says m42. Several other sites i found both said m40 for some reason. So in my confusion why not ask people who should know? makes perfect sense to me...
plus how should i have known they used the same engine if i didnt know what engine it had? is it really that had to just to answer a question and not call people stupid? =PLeave a comment:

I wanted to know the "IS" version of it, all the googe engine gives me is the "I"
