Help with m42 bearing installation (during clutch swap)

    Hey guys-

I’m having trouble figuring out where/how to install a bearing while performing an m42 clutch swap.
The part# is 11211720310 (#5 in realOEM diagram below)

(it doesn’t appear to be a press-fit into the flywheel since the bearing has a smaller outside diameter than the flywheel’s internal diameter)

A prior mechanic may have elected not to replace it.. I don’t see where the old one is/was. (pictures are of me holding a new bearing)
It appears that I could place it onto the input shaft of the tranny..

or it should go into the flywheel mounting ‘wheel’ (for lack of better term)? I can drive it in- but then it sticks out about 3/16”. It may "drive in" further- but I didn't want to be doing more harm than good- and stopped.

I took a bearing puller tool and pulled out what appeared to be a dust cap. I thought it might be behind that.. but then that didn’t make much sense since the bearing has a bigger inside diameter than the outside diameter of the end of the input shaft (no contact of or benefit from the bearing itself).

    Any/all help appreciated..

funny, i had this happen before with another M42 car. i replaced the trans from another 318is when my synchros became too much of an annoyance to deal with them any longer.

The trans input shaft was a different diameter for the pilot bearing, fortunately i had a bearing that worked.

You can find a sealed bearing using the inside diameter, outside diameter, width and material to suit your needs. Internets or local shops can help. It should slip on with little play, they are not pressed onto the input shaft, but it should be a snug fit inside the crank.

    good luck!

      Thanks Joe! Good/interesting to know.
Yep- what I’m dealing with is the pilot bearing. (oddly enough, a chilton’s manual was more helpful then my Bentley’s in this regard)
What I’m after should be behind the ‘dust cap/spacer’ thingy I pulled earlier.
..and I think another handicap I’m dealing with is the boogered-up puller tool I rented..

It just pops loose/off when striking the slide-hammer.

I'm going to file/blitz/re-shape the "grabber tongs" for better hold on what should be the pilot bearing- then I can compare/measure the old one in effort to acquire the right bearing if my current replacement is, indeed, incorrect.

Your having trouble pulling the old pilot bearing?

I have used grease like this method and it worked excellent.

Yeah.. the worn puller tool I rented caused me some headache. After reshaping the tongs for better ‘grab’, I was able to pull the current pilot bearing.

          before/after

once the puller tool was sorted out, I was able to get the old pilot bearing out- along with the dust cap mentioned earlier.

suggested bearing at left. Removed bearing at right.

Recap: the bearing that came with the Pelican clutch kit was ~1mm thicker, and has an inside diameter that is ~1mm too big for the input shaft of the 240 transmission. With luck, I’ll be able to find a local shop that can find a new match for the old pilot bearing. Joe- thank you again for your input.
