Questions about mozilla and using it w/ AOL

OK, everytime i get on AOL, my dad gets pissed if i just start browsing, without clicking on the mozilla browser (which is an icon on my desktop). Now im pretty sure that IE is our default browser, and AOL runs on that. So how do i convince my dad that just browsing on Mozilla, wont be the magical solution w/ popups, viruses, ect, and how do i change Mozilla to our default browser? Similarly, how do i disable IE?

Another quick question, what steps would you guys take before even browsing the web on a new computer, what would you install, and what browser would you use. Basically how do i prevent a new computer from falling into serious disrepair due to viruses and popups?

Go to Tools/Options in Mozilla, and you should see a "Set as default browser" or similar check box. Check that.

To remove IE, go into Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Components --> Internet Explorer. I'd keep it around, though, as you will occasionally run into pages that you need to view in IE.

For a new computer w/SP2 installed, I recommend you get McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, use the Windows Firewall, and surf w/Firefox to minimize spyware/adware/other things.

I regularly scan for spyware with GIANT Antispyware, but for little checks I use Lavasoft Adaware SE Personal.

yeah, see, we have roadrunner, which is ok, when its working, but we reformatted our HD, thus deleting the Roadrunner software, and leaving us to surf w. our regular dialup AOL until we can get the shit reinstalled.

I have RR and have never had to install the "software" that you're talking about. At least not with Windows XP.

            1st step: delete AOL

I dont think you should have a problem getting online w/o the roadrunner software.
