    Has anybody measured...

Has anybody measured the room from the sheetmetal under the firewall to the HVAC box? I need to know how many inches room there is to help with going about carefully cutting into the firewall to make room for the stock hydraulic fan in the m30.

I hope I posted this in the right section, I didn't know where else to put it. Any help would be great

You're going to cut into the firewall? Out of curiosity why would you opt for cutting rather than the usual 'beat it in with a large hammer' technique?

I want it to look as factory and clean as possible. I'm willing to do the extra work for the way it will turn out.

i hate to crap on your idea, but without welding/bodywork experence or someone to help that does..........this could turn out ugly.

if you measure everything out, cut a 2x4 to the proper lengths, place them on the firewall, then beat on the 2x4 with BFH you will have almost factory like results

Of course it won't be just me. But besides being critical of my methods, does anybody know the measurements?

Why do you want to use the stock clutch fan? Electrical ones are far superior.

You're using a b35 right? AFAIK you don't need any firewall modification for a b35, as long as you don't expect to use the stock fan.

However, it sounds like you want to use a stock fan with it, which imo might be more trouble than it's worth. But it's your car. If you do end up doing it I'd be interested to see how it turns out.

                    He's got a B34.

Andrew - head over to your local junk yard and find an e30 w/o a dash and/or w/o engine in it.

do you need the measurements for the cutting clearences or to see how far you can more the firewall in?

tell me how you plan on doing it, after you cut the wall and i will try to give you some tips.

if you really want to it "right" you should pull the dash and anything on the backside of the firewall to make sure you do not fuck up anything on the other side. it will also make it easier to weld correctly.

Hmm, wow. You're kind of an asshole.

I'm looking to cut into the firewall just 1-2 inch. That's all I'll need. I can get the viscous fan in there with the engine as far back as possible, but at certain times when braking the engine will actually slide forward barely with the mounts i'll be using, so as a safety preventative, I want that extra 1-1.5 inches cut into the firewall.

Jean, checking out the junkyard is an excellent idea, I'll do that.

Well Andrew, with all due respect for keeping everything "stock", there are places where you should really upgrade; as in the case of the fan.
