    give me an educated opinion

i run a small body shop and im pretty good at what i do. but times are tough and work is slow and this opportunity fell into my lap...

i already have a 98 m3 parts car with 58 miles on it and i can pick up an 87 325e for pretty cheap. body has 240k miles and is clean title.

what i am happy to see on this car:

    completely rebuild suspension
    eibach/bilstein and tokico sway bars
    borbets that i can sell
    2.7 es/i motor
    m3 seats
    body is in decent shape
    late bumpers already on

now, my plan is to sell off the motor/transmission and wheels out of it to fund the project and do the following:

clean up the body - fix all the dents and dings, roll/pull fenders, do a little shaving/smoothing, install a rear lip and just make the rear bumper look right (i can do this, trust me)

    clean up the engine bay

    full respray

wrap the seats in red leather/vinyl. door panesl will be red/black. headliner and anything that shows age will be taken care of so it will look brand new inside.

swap in the e36 m3 motor/transmission, make it CA carb legal

    e36 non m brakes so i can fit 16s

because the suspension is all fresh, i want to keep it 4 lug and just run some 16x8 porsche d90s.

the other option is to swap in the front m3 5 lug (58k miles so its all good condition too) and z3 rear and run some 17x8 style 42s that i have. if i go this route, i will run M3 front brakes.

i know there are hacks out there but this thing will be CLEAN inside and out with custom work on area of the car.

so considering it will go as planned and i end up with a car thats perfectly painted, with new interior and good suspension and low miles s52 swap, what can i get for it REALISTICALLY? i am trying to weigh my options if i should just sell the swap and just fix up the e30 a bit and flip it, or put some real time (that i have plenty of) into it and hopefully make some more money.

honest opinions please and i appreciate your time.

what i am hoping to work on

and im a VW guy, but i do work

honestly (this comming from a body guy) you will NEVER make money on a swap/redo car. maybe if you just redo the car without the swap.

if you are just out to flip, find some seats clean things up and sell it. the money is not out there right now for a semi custom swap car.

if you want to build yourself a bad assed street car you have most everything there that you need to do it.

you dont need non-M e36 brakes to fit 16s.

You will love the red interior in the e30.

          Hey Sanya!

I say, do the swap right and keep the car for yourself :)

Take a look at the FS section, and you'll see what they go for, from $5,000-$10,000; on cars with $7,000 to $30,000 (maybe more) in them. Swaps aren't money-makers, just clean up the E30 and sell the swap for the most profit.

Sounds like you're building one of the best possible street-able e30s... why sell? Keep it!

i love e30s. the reason i bought the e36 M was just so i can build this exact car for myself... but that blue one stole my heart ^ so the e30 project would be just somthing that makes me a little money hopefully.

now lets not worry about how much i can make. i have seen mostly stock, decent e30s with s52 swaps asking 8-10 for them.

im just curious if anyone will pay more if the car is ALL there. everything new and fresh and done right.

and as far as suspension goes, im just asking which will sell better? it doesnt matter to me which way i go. i have the parts for both setups.

charlie, you know but other dont haha

And then there are $5k cars...8k cars don't sell for a looong time. Especially with this economy is not the time, if you are doing a swap do it because you want to not because you want to flip it or make money on it. You'll either have to half-ass it and do a cheap swap to make $ or you end up spending A LOT and you won't get half of it back.

                      My honest opinion.

Your best bet if you want to make money, is to keep the 4 lug, respray the car but do not dump a crapton of labor into flaring fenders, or shaving door moldings, etc.

People will pay money for a well-sorted car, but they won't spend 5K more because the paint is fresh and there aren't wires hanging all over the place.

ok, good valid points here. whats the market for these if its resprayed and cleaned inside and out but still running the 2.7 i motor so i can just sell the swap?
