The scammer wants to send him an $11,000 check, and wants 318driver to keep $6,000 of the check, and wire $5,000 through Western Union to the scammer's "shipping agent". The check ends up being bad and 318driver just lost $5,000.

I had someone try this scam on me relating to rental of my vacation home. I knew it was BS and told her that I could take the cashier's check for the rent, but that the taxes had to be paid in cash in US Dollars. She even asked me if I could give her MY Fedex account number to send the payment!!!!!

After demanding part of it in cash, she disappeared.

yah but like i mentioned earlier, would one not verify the validity of the check before sending their car or wiring any money to a stranger?

Not everyone would. It's not like the scammer gets a payoff on every scam he trys. If he emails twenty people about twenty different cars and only one wires him the money, he just made $5,000.
