At least you have a clean car. I paid 5000 for a "prefect car" I didnt run the carfax being 15 at the time. Ive been parting the car for the last 6 months. (im lazy)
My mothers 95 M3 has a branded title "Previous damage in the state of California"
Some previous owner rearended someone (how do you manage to do that with those M binders?) anyways... the bumper cover, bumper, both fenders, and hood are new DOT-R replacements. The nose panel is the original one! I don't see how that is worthy of a branded title... the only damage beyond that is the front bumper carriers (that extend off the frame) were crumpled back about 6 inches. They were pulled out properly and are now mint.
I believe that in California salvage titles are only issued when the insurance company takes the car back. So for whatever reason, maybe the PO was one of those "I can't drive any car that's been in an accident" guys and took a check from the insurance instead, so the car got branded a salvage.

My car *had* a little alert on carfax, because the PO's daughter hit the fender with her bike. Replaced with a DOT-R fender, etc. He showed me the old fender, it was only a half dollar sized ding
