A rockstar who was actually a really nice guy got killed while playing on stage, and all you guys can do is argue about which guns are better for shooting people?
RIP Dimebag, and all the others killed, too.
Props to that cop for running in without backup and taking out that asshole before anyone else got hurt. Rumor has it that Vinnie Paul's drum tech dove on him "like a secret service agent" once the shooting started, and took two in the leg. True heros.

I knew Darrell.
His dad is a producer in Nashville, where I used to be a studio musician. I first met Darrell when I was touring with Reba M, and Pantera was playing in another part of whatever town it was we were in. We went over and caught part of the show. Gawd, did they have chicks lined up for DAYS! Helluva player. Nice guy. Very, very intelligent.
I think it's rather ironic- that night he mentioned how often he felt threatened by dumbasses with guns. So many clubs, especially in the '90s had no real security, and he wondered when some jealous dude was show up and try to waste him. Even joked about how all these guys that quote the Second Amendment never seem to know the first part. The whole point of the thing was to legalize guns(since they'd been outlawed under British rule) so that the people could act as a "well regulated militia" and fight for their country. WELL REGULATED....MILITIA.
There's nothing remotely well regulated about a bunch of people running around with handguns.
Handguns in homes kill more family members than intruders every year. Wanna make your home safer? Get rid of your guns!
Darrell will be missed. I liked the new band. As for those who think he screwed up Pantera, well....bands are hard to keep together. Especially successful ones.

I hope this does not offend anybody, but:
this goes along with my "sold his soul to the devil" theory.
Jemi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn
and now, Dimebag Darrell.
They all died far too soon, and in some pretty odd or questionable ways, too.
Jimi Hendrix - Died at 36, questionable suicide involving suffocation on vomit and sleeping pills (did he really kill himself?)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Died at age 35. Helicopter crash? Or was he in a train when a plane flew too low and crashed into his part of hte train? Once again, mid 30s, abnormal way to die.
Dimebag Darrell - Age 38. He died as a result of FIVE gunshot wounds to the chest in an INSIDE club. A 'rare occurence' as a news reporter of the Seattle-Intelligence put it.

A long time friend of mine named W.A. Williams was there that night. He is a photographer and friend of SRV's who helped with Stevie's process of getting clean. Several of his original photos of SRV and Jimmy Vaughan are displayed in my home.
W.A. used to say that after Stevie was sober, he felt like he just couldn't cram all the living he had missed into the available hours. In other words, he was ALWAYS in a hurry. That night, Stevie was planning to ride back to Chicago with W.A. to chat about the tour, and to look at some photo contact sheets for approval. The gig had run long though, and Stevie was typically impatient. W.A. and Stevie were walking toward the helipad and W.A. was still trying to get SRV to go with him. It was getting foggier by the minute. Eric's chopper was sitting there, but Eric was not on board yet-some last minute business was holding him up, but he was standing right there on the pad. Eric broke from the meeting and said to Stevie, "I'll be a few more minutes-why don't you go ahead?" That is why some of Eric's crew (including his stage manager, I think) were on that chopper. Stevie's last words to W.A. were "let's hook up tomorrow in Chicago-I'll see you there-I gotsta go!"
Stevie had admitted to having premonitions of his own death in the weeks leading up to his demise. He was rather superstitious, and when a light truss fell and broke the neck of the guitar he called "Number 1" he really started into apprehension.
W.A. watched the chopper take off, and noticed that it banked off in a direction different from the others, but thought nothing of it at the time. He was awakened by a phone call early the next morning from Stevie's manager-the helicopter had crashed shortly after take-off, no one survived....Stevie was dead. W.A. was in counseling for nearly a year and half. He wondered what he could've or should've done to keep SRV off that chopper. I guess he was supposed to be where he was, but I miss him still.
I was in a country blues band that opened for Stevie in '91 in Cincinnati. There were problems with his amps and his soundcheck had run long. They finally finished and the club's stage manager told us to set up, but that we would get no sound check, since it was time for the doors to open. Stevie heard about this, and came back onstage and told the club that he had spent years getting no soundcheck and vowed that when he headlined that his opener would be treated well. We got a soundcheck and a dressing room stocked with beer, water and food. That was because he spoke up. Super nice, gracious guy.
Dimebag was the victim of a paranoid-schizophrenic. The shooter's friends had seen him go off the deep end, but did nothing.
And Jimi,...............hmmm.................somebody knows........
The answer's OUT THERE. 8)

I spent 10 years on the road with bands out of Nashville. Some years we were gone over 300 days. Been to all 50 states and most of Canada. Road musician's motto: "Been everywhere-seen nothing". It's a crazy life to see the world from a bus or plane, and then go on stage and know where you are only because the crew put a sign on the stage with gaffer's tape with the city on it! Later I started doing sessions in town, then left completely when a opportunity to buy a business came up.
Now I own a bike shop and play music for fun. Kinda hard to keep a family together when you're gone all the time. I spend my time fixing bikes and cars and screwing around with amps and whatever.
