That info is practically imposible to get. Actually the CEO of BMW can't get it. The only place where an engine matched to a chassis number would be documented was on the actual work sheet of the particular car that was given to the engine section at the assembly line. Unlike chevy, ford and other american manufacturers that documented the matching numbers theme very religiously, the build sheets from basically every BMW up to the E36 were thrown away when the car was done. I know if for a fact as it was explained to me at the Munich factory a few years back when the e36 was in production. Don't know after that. I then asked again last year when I was again at the factory visiting the new museum and got pretty much the same answer. I even have a hook up at BMW AG my friend Rolf and not even him could find any info on my M3. I did a pretty exhaustive investigation on the subject as I wanted to have a 100% matching numbers car influenced by my dad who is a huge american muscle collector. SO if the vin tags were removed from the engines then you are out of luck.

You say up to the e36?
So were the build sheets after e36's kept? If so i might be in luck since this is an s52 with a build date of 14/02/99 .
I just know in some countries its required that a vin/engine serial are both registered and i figured maybe bmw would keep records of the matches.
Just for kicks, here is the engine serial, maybe you guys can find something out for me?
Serial: 37952677
Engine Code: 32 69 2 (which tells us its 3.2L 6cyl, last two numbers I don't know what it means lol)
