    M62 valley cover fun

It was time to replace the valley cover (along with belts, new fan clutch, valve cover gaskets, leaking ps hose, new front/rearbrakes, and some other things while you are there).

Not too complicated of a job, but you do have to remove a lot of things to get to the valley cover that tend to leak with age.

Pretty much everything on top of the intake manifold along with the manifold needs to be removed. Ignition coils, wiring, vacuum lines, fuel rail, manifold, tb, fan clutch, water pump, coolant pipes etc).

    top view

    cylinder banks

fuel rail has only one line going to it, no return line, i believe the fuel filter (next to replace) has an integrated fpr in it. another nice thing about this fuel rail is it's valve on the passenger side, I used it to relieve the fuel pressure and not spray fuel everywhere.

    vacuum stuff

once you remove a bunch of stuff, you can get to the manifold

    tb is off

all gaskets front to back will be replaced and tb/manifold will need some cleaning, pretty nasty

i had the valve covers blasted, and put on to not drop anything inside the engine. the driver side fresh air duct needs to be removed in order to access the back of the intake manifold

manifold is off, ready for cleaning and new front/rear/bottom gaskets

you can see the pipe under it that must be disconnected before the manifold can be lifted up

now time to remove fan clutch/water pump/belts,pulley and the coolant pipes (and install new o-rings).

vacuum everything and cover the intake ports , also knock sensors need to be removed in order to lift the valley cover up

[img]water pump/rad/tstat was recently replaced, i'll just replace gaskets again

it's fun to remove the pump, it's got 6 bolts, and the bottom one is PITA!!!

    coolant pipes off

    old valley cover

new one did not come with the top black plastic cover... strange design.

new one test fitted after cleaning all the surfaces etc

Now a quick question for those who've done the valve cover job on these cars. Do I need to cut this off, flush with the head or leave it? I am installing new valve cover gaskets and don't know if these will overlap or if they need to be cut?

Need to pick up a new heater hose to replace while I am there tomorrow.

Valve covers have been blasted, new gaskets test fitted.

    More tomorrow lol

I've been there! I have a 99 540i. I think it took me about 6-7 hours, I didnt cut that spot down where its not flush. I think you use a special sealant over that spot, but I dont remember the name.

        Awesome. No after pics? :)

Also, just a comment, inline/embedded pictures would probably be easier to follow.

I am finishing it up tomorrow if the dealer has the two parts I need in stock . I don't want to put it back together w/o replacing a couple of hoses while I am there, and that top plastic cover over the valley cover. Maybe new o-rings for the injectors as well.

            Lies. It is not fun!

You need a new black plastic heatshield and cover plugs (4). And it must be attached to the valley pan before the pan is installed...

Yeah, wtf is the point of that plastic cover? The valley cover itself seals that coolant chamber on top of the block off, so is the top black cover just a visual thing with no other purpose or what?

Lol, gotcha. Yeah picking it up tomorrow, with the clips and heater hose.

Replace the black box at the rear of the intake manifold. It goes bad soon enough.

Also, lose the torx bolts and replace with allen keyed ones from Lowes or whatnot.

Never seen it done before - about as bad as I expected. Thanks for the pics.

Good work, removed a few more things than needed to but such is life.

As for the gasket where the valve cover meets the upper timing chain cover, there is a special tool which essentially mimics the bottom of the valve cover so that the gasket sits flush with the machined surface. Dunno how absolutely necessary it is though. Make sure to put some RTV down where there are any seams however.

It was mentioned earlier, but I would replace the crankcase breather on the back of the manifold while you're at it, pretty sure it comes with a new tube as well.

While you have everything apart and you're resealing the coolant system I would replace the gaskets on the rear water passage as well on the back of the block where the coolant pipes run into. Not too bad of a job with the intake removed.

                        Keep up the good work.

I ended up ordering that rear EGR cover plate, new vent pipe that runs under the intake manifold along with the valley cover heat shield/clips and heater hose. I am going to replace two rear gaskets as well, it would suck if they start to leak later lol.

Bought some RTV and looks like people just leave those gaskets alone and use some rtv there and at the back of the head behind the cams.

Hopefully won't have any left over parts lol. Fingers crossed last few parts will be in tomorrow.

Well, shit! Got the valve covers done, passenger side is a little more difficult to do because of the darn a/c line that goes to it's valve. Got the plastic clips for the valley cover heatshield today, but the heatshield/vent tube and egr thing didn't show up today so I could only do so much. The TB was f-ing nasty, lots of build up on the inside. This is where I looked for the TB gasket and realized I don't have one on hand! ARGH.

Removing the vents for the fresh air gives you almost all the room you'll need to do the rear two gaskets for the water accumulator.

You can do it with those out. Just lean with your knees hyperextended over the fenders and your back about to be murdered and you can put a socket on those bolts. You'll need an inch extension on some of the passenger side and I used a 1/4" drive rachet to get in there.

Here's the screws you'll need to not want to kill yourself re-assembling.

Half the torx hardware stripped out on me and it was vice city grip time. These were super easy to use, especially in the tight spaces around the TB with just an allen key. You'll need a crush washer the right side.
