Im comtemplating joining our local Air National Guard after I graduate college. I dont want to do it now because I run track, and cross country, and I would have to miss alot of meets, a whole summer of training (because I would have to go to basic training). But would I be looking at getting my tuition reembursed? Also, do you choose the job you get, or are you just stuck with something? Whats the pay like, and I can only imagine the benifits are rivaled by no other.

benefits are hard to compare, if thing is something you wanna do...if you go in with a job in mind, it will yield more positive results. AF has tons of jobs from any field, many enlist and then goto college or academy(me).
I knew I wanted to do some sort of special forces in the military and AF had alot of oppurtunities for me so thats the route i took(TAC-P). I prepared big time physically w/simple pushups, situps, pullups, ruckruns but I was an athlete previously BUT then again ive seen athletes quit so take it as you may...
Thats the only thing you can really prepare for previously, I was attached to Army infantry units most of my time so I didnt pay much attention/could have gave a shit about other AF jobs...i know if u get deployed=no taxes, but not sure if you have to be in a combat zone
ANG jobs however i think are based on local factors but not sure...check out http://www.goang.com/careers/unit.aspx
Idont believe they will pay you for something you were previously involved in, but maybe later in yer career if you get commissioned then they will pay for your masters.
Good Luck and appreciate your service(potential)

I am currently in the ANG in Ohio. Yes you can get your tution reembursed, but I am not really sure how much. It is a little different if you are going for officer compared to enlisted slots. Officer you make more money, but I am not sure on what else you may get in your contract ie tution reembursement, which I know you can get going enlisted. Job wise, it depends on the base, when you talk to the ANG recruiter depending on your ASVAB score, and what openings they have, is what you can pick. But you get to pick your job, but depending on the open slot depends on how many options you get. There are only so many open slots for each job. I chose avionics for the F16, one of the longest tech school, but I got my assoc in electronics from the AF now because of it. If is a fun job, and interesting. In the guard you only get benefits if you are acive duty, once you go back on guard status you lose your benefits.

I'm not in the reserves or anything, just active duty Navy. If you're seriously thinking of a job, look into cryptology or linguistics...you get sent to Monterey, CA (where I am), get paid to learn a language (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Serbian/Croatian, Persian Farsi, Spanish and sometimes French) and then you get paid for knowing the language after you finish! Active duty gets max $300/month (maybe 350) if you know more than one language besides english, and I know they're raising it for Army. I just finished up the Serbian/Croatian class and am getting 300 for knowing spanish and serb/cro....just a thought. HTH.

EDIT: Laguna Seca is only 15 minutes from here, too! Plus the annual Concours d' Elegance and that huge auction, cant remember what its called.

Oh I forgot, pay isn't to bad. My base pay for an E4 with 2 yrs. after taxes is about $157 for the weekend. But since I am in school, and my job qualified for a kicker, and a bonus, plus the Montgomery GI Bill, I end up with around $750 dollars a month for one weekend's worth of work. I also got the signing bonus with my job. The kicker and bonus is all based on what the Guard Bureau say which job gets them, so the bonus ranges from 2, 3, 5, or 8 thousand, and kicker just decided on whcih jobs they feel deserve it.

The 121st is what im thinking of getting into Beau. Its at rickenbacker AFB. My grandpa recently retiired from there a few yrs ago, and i know a few people that work there. I think the one job I would want would be to fly one of the tankers. It might be a long shot, but Ive been interested in that stuff since I was young.

He's in school now so he should see if the school has a ROTC attachment that way he can attend and maybe finish roughly the same time and get his commision.
I choose not to get mine as I didn't want to give up flying. No thanks the bs involved is to much also but the pay is better. But I can't complain, Msgt with 17 years of service on AD and fkying status and I get a tutution kicker for serving the last three years on AD.
Remember thou the AD side of the house is pulling constantly from the ANG and AFRES to back fill slots in the middle east and everywhere else so You just might find your self deployed to a big sand pit.
Did three rotations in and around the area in 90, 92, 94 so I know the place very well. Matter of fact I am scheduled to go there in a day.
